Discover Balkan

This Balkan journey offers exploration of Southeast Europe’s diverse cultures, dramatic landscapes, and layered history, beginning in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. Upon arrival, guests are transferred to their hotel and welcomed by a tour representative. A panoramic city tour introduces Zagreb’s distinctive two-level layout, highlighting the medieval Upper Town and the elegant Austro-Hungarian districts that define the modern capital.

Traveling south into Bosnia and Herzegovina, the route passes through regions still marked by the events of the 1990s. In Banja Luka, capital of Republika Srpska, there is time to explore the fortress and Orthodox cathedral before continuing to Jajce, renowned for its scenic waterfall and historic fortress. The day concludes in Sarajevo, where the Ottoman-era bazaar reflects the city’s unique blend of cultures.

Sarajevo, often called the “Jerusalem of Europe,” reveals a remarkable coexistence of mosques, churches, and synagogues within its historic center. The journey then continues to Mostar, famed for its iconic stone bridge spanning the Neretva River, before crossing back into Croatia to reach the Adriatic jewel of Dubrovnik. A guided visit showcases its perfectly preserved walled old town, the Franciscan Monastery, and the Cathedral of the Assumption, followed by a boat excursion to Lokrum Island.

Proceeding along the Adriatic coast into Montenegro, the tour visits Kotor, set within a dramatic bay and known for its Venetian architecture, and Budva, a picturesque walled seaside town. Crossing into Albania, guests arrive in Tirana, where a panoramic tour highlights its mosques, Clock Tower, and government buildings.

The journey continues toward Lake Ohrid, crossing into North Macedonia. In Ohrid, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, guests visit the historic Plaošnik Monastery and explore a city shaped by centuries of religious and cultural influence. From Bitola, with its lively Širok Sokak promenade, the route enters Greece and reaches the extraordinary rock formations of Meteora, where a visit to one of the cliff-top monasteries offers insight into Orthodox monastic tradition.

Traveling onward to Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city, the tour then crosses into Bulgaria, stopping in Melnik, a small town celebrated for its wine and distinctive architecture, before arriving in Sandanski. A highlight of the Bulgarian segment is the UNESCO-listed Rila Monastery, renowned for its vibrant frescoes and mountainous setting.

The journey concludes in Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital, where a guided tour includes the magnificent St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the Russian Church, and landmarks reflecting the city’s diverse historical influences. After breakfast on the final day, the tour ends, leaving guests with lasting impressions of the Balkans’ cultural richness, historic complexity, and striking natural beauty.
